    The cost of a tablet is $290, including GST. What is the amount of GST paid on this tablet?

    the GST is 10% added onto the original price of 100% so $290 will be 110% of the price

    to find the original $290 ÷ 110% =$263.64

    GST = $290 – $263.64

    = $26.36

    If an item is $120 including the GST:
    a. Find the GST.
    b. Find the price before the GST.

    a. $120 ÷ 11 = $10.91

    ∴ the GST is $10.91

    to find the GST from a price including the GST, following the diagram, we divide by 11.

    with rounding to two decimal places for money

    b. $120 ÷ 11 x 10 = $109.09
    ∴ the price before the GST was added is $109.09
    to find the price before the GST, following the diagram, we divide by 11 then multiply by 10.
    ∴ the price before the GST was added is $109.09 so price before GST is $109.09
    Alternatively

    120 ÷ 110% = $109.09 we can use another method to find the price before the GST and then use that to work out the GST
    since the price before GST is 100%, and then we add 10% then the price including the GST will be 110%
    to find the price before the GST we need to divide by 110%

    GST = $120 – $10 9.09

    = $10.91

    If an item is $200 before the GST is added, how much will a customer pay for it after the GST is included?
    $200 ÷ 10 x 11 = $220 if we know the pre-GST price, then, following the diagram, we divide by 10 then multiply by 11.
    ∴ the price including GST will be $220
